The Stewarts of Balquhidder including the principal families of Ardvorlich, Glen Buckie, Gartnafuaran,
and Annat and their cadets lived in the areas of Balquhidder, Callander &
the Trossachs, Loch Earn and as far south as the Blair Drummond Moss and
Stirling from the 15th century to this day. They were tacksmen
or land holders under the Earls and Dukes of Atholl,

The Stewarts of Balquhidder William Stewart of Baldorran
(in Campsie, Stirlingshire) lived during the late-15th century. He was the
grandson of James Mhor Stewart, who was the only
son of Murdoch Stewart, Duke of Albany, to survive the persecution of King
James I in 1425. In 1490 William Stewart of Baldorran
was appointed Royal Bailie of the Crown Lands of Balquhidder.
William brought the Stewart name to Balquhidder and
was the founder of our clan. The Stewarts of Ardvorlich,
Glen Buckie, Gartnafuaran and Annat
and all their cadet families are all descended from William. The Stewarts of Balquhidder originated in the parish of Balquhidder but quickly spread east and south to the
parishes of Callander, Comrie, Kilmadock,
Kincardine-by-Doune, Aberfoyle, For a more detailed
explanation of the Stewarts of Balquhidder, their
history and ancestors, their principal families, cadet branches and
descendants please go to Ryk Brown’s web site, Stewarts of Balquhidder
Research Group or to his
older Rootsweb, PRINCIPAL FAMILIES PAGE. The Stewarts of Balquhidder
Research Group This website has been
created to help bring together independent researchers who researching
Stewart families in the Balquhidder area of The Stewarts of Balquhidder Research Group is a group of amateur
volunteer part-time genealogical researchers who either descend from the
Stewarts of Balquhidder or who have an interest in
researching the descendants of this clan.
We have agreed to share
our research together for free so that we may all learn more about our
Stewart ancestors. We believe shared
research is far more productive than individual research. We do not pay for research and we are not
available for hire as researchers. We
may be able to assist you with your research, but we cannot do your research
for you. If you are researching
any of these Stewart lines, we encourage you to contact us on our FACEBOOK DISCUSSION FORUM. We
are hopeful that through our joint research efforts, we will be able to
better understand our Stewart ancestors who lived so many years ago in this
wonderful part of the Highlands of Scotland. Membership Membership in the
Stewarts of Balquhidder Research Group is FREE and
voluntary. The requirements for
membership are simple: 1. You must be a
descendant of any branch of the Stewarts of Balquhidder
OR you must have a demonstrated interest in contributing to the research of
this clan. 2. You must be willing
to share your research findings (related to this clan) for free with the
other members of the Stewarts of Balquhidder
Research Group and be willing to have your research (related to this clan)
published on our web site. To become a MEMBER of
the Stewarts of Balquhidder Research Group simply: 1. Go to our on-line FACEBOOK DISCUSSION
FORUM. (https://www.facebook.com/groups/589079205035659/) 2. Register for the
forum. It is FREE and takes only a
minute. 3. “Introduce
Yourself”. 4. Post a message
introducing yourself and how you believe you are connected to the Stewarts of
Balquhidder (we don’t
require proof) or what you believe you can contribute to our discussion and
research. History of the Stewarts of Balquhidder
Research Group The Stewarts of Balquhidder Research Group was founded in 2002 by Chuck
Speed and Ryk Brown. Chuck and Ryk
“met” on-line in the summer of 2002 while researching their common ancestry
and agreed that it would be mutually beneficial to share their research. Over the next few months they met other
fellow descendants and began to work together via email. In November 2002 this web-site was launched
as a single page with an invitation to other researchers to join the
group. Over the ensuing years the site
has grown to 100 pages of information and over 60 fellow researchers from all
over the world! By the summer of 2007
the breadth of our discussions and the size of our group had outgrown the
confines of group emails and in August 2007 The Stewarts of Balquhidder FACEBOOK DISCUSSION FORUM was launched as a more efficient method for
discussing our Stewart research. Chuck Speed is a
retired former Human Resources Director for the City of Amarillo, Texas and
Corpus Christi, Texas. He is a descendant of Patrick Stewart of Ledcreich who first immigrated from Ledcreich,
Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to the Cape Fear
area of the North Carolina colony in America in 1739. Ryk Brown is a former Presbyterian pastor from
Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He is descended from Robert Stewart in St. Fillans, of the Stewarts of Dalveich,
whose widow and children fled The Clearances to immigrate to Hamilton,
Ontario, Canada in 1834. Credit and Acknowledgement for Research
Contributions We practice the
principle of “collective” research.
Any research you contribute to our project will become the property of
the whole group. We do not, and will
never, sell our research for profit.
We publish primarily on this website but on occasion our members may
contribute papers or articles to various other publications. Because of the nature of shared, collective
research it is impossible to give individual credit for specific individual
contributions via the Discussion Forum.
The “author” of our research is deemed to be the group as a
whole. The web-masters and forum administrators
are merely editors. We do not claim
authorship of the group’s work.
However if you contribute a specific and complete report to the group
then your report will be published in our Reports Section (below) and you
will be given full and sole credit for your work. As a member you are
welcome to write and publish your own papers or books related to your own
Stewart family. However we request
that you cite our website as one of your sources and please do not claim
personal credit for collective research. Site Map Main Page: Discussion Forum: Principal Families, Cadet Branches and Descendants: 5.
Stewarts of Rait and Annat by Gordon MacGregor Searchable On-Line Database: This searchable database includes
most (but not quite all) of the documented male-line descendants of the
Stewarts of Balquhidder up to the point of
emigration from Scotland. It does not
include descendants outside of Scotland (except for Ryk’s
own branch). Please note this database includes other families that Ryk is also researching which may be of no relation to
our Stewarts. Research Resources Please note that for some parish and census
records below you may find more than one set of transcriptions independently
transcribed by different volunteers that appear to be duplicates. Some old parish records can be extremely
difficult to read. These “duplicate”
transcriptions allow you to see how two different sets of eyes read the same
entries and can be an invaluable resource when trying to interpret obscure
entries. However we do encourage all researchers to view the films for
themselves and make your own determination. Old Parish
